BRSR Core: the year the evidence becomes yours

Coverage expands to the top 1,000 listed entities for FY 2026–27. The reporting date is still ahead. The evidence on which assessment or assurance will depend is being created now.

A winding tidal channel connects water, woodland and wetland.

An annual disclosure has a publication date. The records that support it have a working life long before that date. This distinction should shape how an Indian listed company prepares for BRSR Core.

The immediate task is to understand the requirement. The management task is to make the numbers reproducible: to establish where they come from, what they include and who can explain them. Appointing a provider does not transfer that responsibility.

The next step in coverage is already here

BRSR Core covers a specified set of indicators across nine attributes. Its assessment-or-assurance requirement expands from the top 500 listed entities by market capitalisation in FY 2025–26 to the top 1,000 in FY 2026–27. The published sequence is set out below.1

Start by confirming the entity’s applicable reporting scope and period, taking account of its market-capitalisation ranking and any verification already undertaken. Then establish which indicators, facilities and records the current engagement must cover.

A choice of verification route still requires preparation

SEBI's March 2025 changes allow assessment or assurance. Third-party assessment follows standards developed by the Industry Standards Forum in consultation with SEBI. The separate December 2024 Industry Standards on Reporting of BRSR Core guide preparation of the reported indicators.23

The two verification routes should not be assumed to involve identical procedures or evidence requests. Management should agree the applicable basis, scope and timetable with its provider early. Whichever route is chosen, an unexplained figure in a spreadsheet is a poor starting point.

Independence belongs in the appointment decision

The provider's eligibility is more than a question of technical competence. SEBI requires freedom from conflicts and restricts the provider and its associates from selling products or non-audit, non-assessment or non-assurance services, including consulting, to the listed entity or its group. Its FAQ permits a statutory auditor subject to the relevant conditions, while excluding the internal auditor.14

Review the provider's current and prior relationships, the services involved and any conflicts under the applicable independence requirements before appointment. The company should not assume that the team helping construct the reporting process can also independently assess or assure it.

Make that review part of procurement. A late discovery of an independence problem can compress the time available for a new provider to understand the business and inspect the records.

The number is the end of an evidence chain

Consider a water-consumption figure consolidated from several facilities. The total may be arithmetically correct while the reporting basis remains unclear. Confirm whether it covers leased premises and whether all facilities report the same period. Distinguish metered readings from estimates and establish how corrections are recorded.

A useful evidence trail connects the source record to the reported indicator. It identifies the boundary, the definition, the calculation, the person preparing it and the person reviewing it. It also preserves the explanation for an exception. A neat final workbook cannot substitute for that chain.

The sustainability function may coordinate the report, but the underlying records can sit in operations, HR, procurement and facilities. Those teams need definitions and responsibilities while the data is being produced. Asking them to reconstruct a year of practice at year-end creates avoidable uncertainty.

Three questions expose the work that remains

Can each indicator be traced to a named operational owner and a documented basis? A spreadsheet custodian is not necessarily the person who knows how the original record was created. Where the chain breaks, assign a specific remedial task, an owner and a date.

Has the provider's scope and independence been reviewed against the actual group relationships? Resolve uncertainty before fieldwork, including any services supplied by associates. Do not rely solely on familiarity with the firm's name or on an earlier engagement letter.

Can management explain changes in boundaries, methods and comparatives? A new facility, a revised estimate or an improved calculation can change the reported series. Establish the basis for the comparison and the explanation readers will need. An unexplained movement invites doubt even when the underlying change is reasonable.

Voluntary value-chain disclosure still deserves a decision

For the top 250 listed entities, value-chain ESG disclosure is voluntary from FY 2025–26; its assessment or assurance is voluntary from FY 2026–27. The framework identifies partners individually accounting for at least 2% of purchases or sales, respectively, and permits coverage to be limited to 75% of each.2

These are disclosure-coverage rules, not a complete map of sustainability exposure. A smaller supplier may hold a critical capability or create a significant environmental or social risk. Management should decide separately what deserves attention, what information can be obtained reliably and what it is ready to publish. Voluntary reporting leaves room for judgment; it does not make the business exposure disappear.

The lasting test is whether the process survives the report

A well-prepared reporting cycle should leave the business with clearer definitions, accountable owners and records it can use again. Otherwise, the next year begins with the same reconstruction exercise.

That is the management opportunity inside BRSR Core. The verification engagement has a defined scope. The discipline it encourages can improve how the organisation understands its own operations. The benefit depends on what management changes in the working process, not on the polish of the published document.

The most useful preparation is to ask for one reported number and follow it back to its origin. What cannot be explained today becomes the work to organise now.
